Sixth Form

Sixth Form

At Kings’ School Al Barsha, we recognise that entering students on the correct pathway and for the most appropriate subjects is the first key step in ensuring academic success. This process starts with high quality careers advice for all Year 11 students. We offer a wide range of A-Levels and BTECs, and our students inevitably gain places at their first choice of university. In the summer of 2025, 47% of all entries were awarded the top A*-A grades.

True to Kings’ emphasis on the development of the whole child, Sixth Form students enjoy and benefit from a wide range of extracurricular pursuits. From team sport to music and drama, from the Duke of Edinburgh Award to academic societies and overseas trips, our students grow their personalities, confidence, and leadership skills. They become adaptable, resilient and humble young men and women ready to take on the challenges of our ever-changing world.

Our aim is to arm students with the academic and personal skills they need to succeed and thrive in the world beyond Kings’.

The Sixth Form Centre

Our Sixth Form common room is a uniquely designed environment, like a professional workspace. Ultimately, it’s the heart of our Sixth Form where students have full ownership over space. We have excellent and spacious study facilities: there are individual and quiet study areas, group work areas for project work and a lecture theatre, which can be used for whole year groups or as a teaching space for departments. Our Head of Sixth form and Heads of Year are based here too, so they are always on hand for support and guidance.

Kings' Diploma

Our Sixth Form offers a flexible and supportive programme that prepares students for university and life beyond school. Students study A Levels or vocational qualifications and can also complete the Kings’ Diploma, which combines academic study with enrichment, leadership and real-world experience.

Through opportunities such as the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification), Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, work experience and community involvement, students develop independence, confidence and strong personal skills. With expert guidance and a clear focus on university readiness, our Sixth Form students leave Kings’ School Al Barsha well prepared for higher education and future success.

What is Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a highly regarded element of our extended curriculum and is valued by universities for the academic skills it develops. It is recognised by UCAS as an AS Level qualification and is widely regarded by Russell Group universities as strong preparation for undergraduate study. The EPQ enables students to demonstrate skills that are essential for success at university, including independent research, critical thinking, academic writing and project management.

The EPQ requires students to work independently, reflecting the expectations of higher education, while maintaining a strong academic focus. Students are given the time, structure and academic guidance to explore an area of genuine interest in depth. It involves working independently to produce either a Dissertation, investigation or report, Artefact or design, Performance, either solo or in a group or Charity event (group).

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Gold level) is a highly regarded programme that complements academic study and is valued by universities and employers alike. In an increasingly competitive admissions landscape, the Award enables students to demonstrate qualities beyond examination results, including resilience, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and commitment.

Through a combination of volunteering, skill development, physical activity and a challenging expedition, students set personal goals and develop confidence, independence and adaptability. The Gold Award requires sustained effort and determination, reflecting a high level of personal commitment.

Completion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award strengthens university applications, enhances personal statements and provides students with experiences and skills that support success in higher education and the workplace.

Careers

Careers’ education and guidance is provided for all our students as they navigate their way through the vast array of opportunities available to them once they graduate from Kings’.

We help students to define personalised future pathways that enable them to meet their career aspirations, whilst encouraging work experience and connections with industry professionals to support students in making informed decisions.

A wealth of resources and opportunities are accessible through both a dedicated Careers Team feed and through UNIFROG – a global university and careers portal. In addition to the high level of expert in-house advice we provide, we work closely with universities and external specialists to ensure that students remain informed with relevant and up-to-date information throughout their Sixth Form journey, and to ensure they feel supported throughout their application and interview process.

Destinations

Our Sixth Form curriculum ensures that our students are prepared and can go on to access their desired career pathways, securing places at top universities worldwide.

Each year we see our students apply to a range of global destinations and go on to top universities such as Cornell, Berklee, Virginia Tech, UCL, Kings College London, Durham and the University of Toronto, to name a few.
